Dentures are artificial teeth and gums, created by the dentist and dental laboratory to replace lost or removed natural teeth. A denture can replace one or many teeth and can be either partial or replace a full arch (complete) of your teeth. The denture is usually made of metal and acrylic but your dentist will advise you of the best materials to be used in your individual treatment plan.
If you lose a tooth, especially if it is at the front of the mouth, it can make you anxious. Our dentists would ensure that immediately following the loss or extraction of a tooth, an immediate temporary denture was placed so that you would not be expected to walk around with a noticeable gap that your make you feel uncomfortable. Whilst the extraction socket heals the dentist would arrange for the laboratory to make a replacement permanent denture. This will be made to match the shape and colour of your natural teeth.
Your denture may need adjusting slightly after they are fitted. This is perfectly normal. You may also need to use denture adhesive to help retain your denture. Your dentist will advise you on the application of adhesive, care of the denture, and what to do if you experience any problems.
